2.  2011 DRUMBEAT NATIONAL TOUR

Discovering Relationships Using Music-Beliefs, Emotions, Attitudes & Thoughts

The DRUMBEAT program has been developed in WA and is being widely used across Australia to engage young people facing a range of social and health challenges. Amongst the organisations utilising the program are Princess Margaret Children's hospital in Perth where DRUMBEAT is being incorporated into a number of their clinical service streams including child and adolescent mental health, eating disorders and the mother and baby unit. The program is also being used by clinicians working with child trauma and behavioural issues in the Departments of Child Protection and Corrective Services

The key to the programs success is its attractiveness to young people. It was originally designed in the Wheatbelt region of WA to engage Aboriginal youth with very low levels of self-esteem and has been purposefully designed to be as fun and accessible as possible. Even the most disaffected young person is drawn to the drum. It's music and rhythm and I'm sure you are familiar with the benefits both emotionally, physically and socially of involvement with music and in particular rhythm. It is also very flexible and can be used with a wide range of population groups and with different emphasis between its core components. These different components include a psycho-educational element that prompts discussion on relationship themes through the use of analogies and metaphors drawn from the drum circle. But primarily it is about connection - to others, to communities and to the self in a healthy and supportive way.
